U.S. Montgomery Land Office - incoming letters log, 1881-1905.

This series consists of a log of letters sent by the U.S. Land Commissioner to the Register and Receiver at Montgomery. Each entry includes a numerical designation, an alphabet designation of the type of letter, the date, an explanation of the letter and sometimes the date of receipt. Some volumes include an alphabetical index to names. This series documents the complexities of conducting business in a district land office and the relationship between district land officers and the U.S. Land Commissioner. The Demopolis and Greenville Land Offices were moved to Montgomery in 1879.
